For today’s #FundraiserFriday, we highlight an independent filmmaker’s campaign to screen her movie about this summer’s Movement for Black Lives Convening on the campus where the historic gathering took place. 

SorayaSoi Free took to Kickstarter to fund a screening for "Unapologetically Black," her documentary on the convening—a pivotal moment for organizing around #BlackLivesMatter—at Cleveland State University. Free describes the campaign’s importance on its Kickstarter page:

While at the convening I had no time to shed the number of tears I wanted to shed because I was busy filming those so many memorable moments, but I made up for them as I edited. I knew then that I had to make some rounds. I needed to treat this film like a newborn and utilize it as a teaching tool for many of us as well as a keepsake for those young people that attended. Being that this movie was shot in Cleveland, Ohio, I think it’s only right that the first screening is held there. If you follow the news you will notice that unarmed Black Lives are being murdered by the police, but for some reason Cleveland is leading the way in this tally. I ask that you help me make the first screening to be memorable by helping me fund for the travel expenses for a few individuals that will make this screening even more awesome. 

This campaign, which aims to raise a mere $2,000 over the next 13 days, is one of those rare times where a little goes a long way. Free hopes to keep the momentum going and screen her film across the country follig the premiere. Check out more on the campaign’s Kickstarter page.
