Colorlines sat down with director Laurie Coyle last year to talk about the life and legacy of union organizer Maria Moreno. Now, Coyle’s documentary on the little known woman is set to reach the masses, via a showing on PBS’ Voces series. “Adios Amor: The Search for Maria Moreno” will premiere on Friday (September 27).

A Mexican-American mother of 12, Moreno was a vocal fighter for impoverished farm workers in California in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and she became “the first farm worker woman in America to be hired as a union organizer,” notes the doc’s synopsis on Vimeo.

Moreno disappeared from the spotlight and the history books, but Coyle and her crew created “Adios Amor” to remind the country of the woman who galvanized farm workers to demand a living wage at a time when women were typically silenced.
