In what beauty insiders have called a “rare misstep,” Fenty Beauty By Rihanna encountered backlash for a highlighter dubbed “Geisha Chic.” USA Today reported yesterday (April 2) that the company pulled the item from its collection.
Shortly after the brand debuted the new shade of Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter last week, fans took to Instagram, calling the name racist and offensive to Asians.
“I think it’s really important that you all rethink this name, as there is a long oppressive history of geisha culture and the fetishization of it is something people need to move away from. Please reconsider,” wrote one Instagram user on a post from Trendmood, the updated version of which appears below.
