The Hollywood Reporter reported yesterday (June 14) that Glover is “in talks” to feature in “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” The film generated controversy when White British actor Tom Holland was cast as ‘Peter Parker,’ despite the then-recent introduction of Black Latino teen ‘Miles Morales’ as the comic book series’ Spider-Man. Since then, the film has faced repeated accusations of Whitewashing for both the casting of Holland and Michael Barbieri, and the recycling of the Peter Parker charecter.
Glover, who voices Morales on Disney XD’s “Ultimate Spider-Man,” featured in a grassroots and social media campaign to portray Spider-Man when Sony first announced the franchise reboot several years ago. That project resulted in 2012’s ”The Amazing Spider-Man,” which starred White British actor Andrew Garfield. Glover commented on the campaign, as well as ensuing racism, in a joke from his stand-up comedy special “Weirdo:”
