A year ago, on January 8th, 2011, Daniel Hernandez made headlines for helping  save congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford’s life last year.

Hernandez, 21, was on his fifth day of a new internship at Gifford’s office when she was shot in front of an Arizona grocery store. When everyone else ran for cover, Hernandez went to take care of her Gifford.

And everyone thinks he’s a hero. Including the commander in chief

"And Daniel, I’m sorry. You may deny it, but we have decided you are a hero, because you ran through the chaos to minister to your boss and tended to her wounds and helped keep her alive," President Obama  said last year at a memorial held in Tucson for the victims who died in the shooting.

But on Sunday, exactly a year later, Hernandez still maintained he’s no hero. 

Hernandez, who’s Mexican-American and happens to be gay, is currently a senior in college and serving on the school board of Tucson’s Sunnyside School District. He’s set to graduate next year and promises to pursue his passion as an advocate for education.
