Director Jon M. Chu ("Now You See Me 2") and author and executive producer Kevin Kwan hoped the film adaptation of "Crazy Rich Asians" would prove that films with Asian casts can succeed in Hollywood. The movie’s $35.3 million opening weekend did just that. Now, the pair will parlay that success into a franchise. 

Anonymous sources told The Hollywood Reporter yesterday (August 22) that Warner Bros. plans to reunite Chu and the "Crazy Rich Asians" creative team, including co-producer Nina Jacobson ("Pose") and writer Adele Lim ("Reign"), to adapt the film’s sequel. The movie will be based on "China Rich Girlfriend," the second book in Kwan’s trilogy about Asia’s economic elite.

While none of the team members have publicly confirmed the sequel, co-producer Brad Simpson ("American Crime Story") told THR that “we have a plan with Kevin for the next two films." Warner Bros. also holds the screen option for the final book, "Rich People Problems."
