Cozy Up With This Lively Podcast on Gerrymandering

By Kenrya Rankin Mar 21, 2018

In an episode released yesterday (March 20), the folks behind the 99% Invisible podcast paired with the folks over at FiveThirtyEight for a deep dive into the practice of gerrymandering, which is when officials draw political boundaries to provide one party an advantage over another.

The episode explores gerrymandering in four different states: Arizona, California, North Carolina and Wisconsin. The segment on North Carolina centers on how Republicans used the practice to dilute the voting power of Black voters with what the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit called “almost surgical precision.” The conversation includes Black politicians and civil rights activists with differing views on the best way to serve Black communities in North Carolina as the Supreme Court forces the state to redraw its congressional districts.
