On August 20, 2015, more than 200 family members, friends, activists and local police gathered for a vigil to honor the life of Jamyla Bolden, the nine-year-girl from Ferguson, Missouri, who was struck and killed by a bullet during a drive-by shooting just two days before. She was on her mother’s bed, doing her homework, just a few hundred yards from where Michael Brown was killed. Her mother was shot in the leg.

Her father, James Bolden, spoke to the crowd, asking them to help secure justice for his child. “I just want her to be in peace and find out why it happened and the person or persons who inflicted this pain come to justice,” he said. “I’m looking for people to come together in this world to celebrate our daughter and her life. That’s what it’s about, it’s about an innocent life taken too soon.” The police have not yet released any information about their investigation into the shooting.

After the vigil, the crowd marched to the site where Michael Brown lay on the ground for four-and-a-half hours after being killed just over a year ago, reportedly chanting “Show me what community looks like.” Bolden’s funeral is scheduled for this Saturday, August 29. There is a $8,000 CrimeStoppers reward for anyone who can help capture her killer.
