It has been 54 years since President Lyndon Johnson, in the company of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others pushing for federal protections for marginalized people, signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law. It put in plae legal recourse meant to shield against discrimination based on “race, color, religion, sex or national origin.”

The anniversary comes as the Trump administration threatens Muslims, immigrants and others who should be protected by the act. Honor its intent by reading the act today. The full text is here, courtesy of the National Archives.
