Chloe Kim is Youngest Female Snowboarder to Win Olympic Gold

By Sameer Rao Feb 13, 2018

Snowboarder Chloe Kim tore past the competition today (February 13) to win her first Olympic gold medal at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang.

ESPN reports that the 17-year-old Kim is the youngest female snowboarder to win a gold medal in the years since snowboarding debuted at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. The Korean-American athlete, who won in the women’s halfpipe competition, is one of 13 Asian-American athletes* representing the U.S. in PyeongChang. She earned the medal in front of an audience that included family from both the U.S. and South Korea.

The New York Times reports that Kim jumped into first place, with a score of 93.75 of 100 points, in her first of three runs. She earned just 41.50 points on her second run, after failing to land back-to-back 1080s, or three full mid-air revolutions. She successfully executed those tricks on her third run, which netted a near-perfect score of 98.25. NBC News noted that she landed the same trick sequence at the U.S. Grand Prix in 2016—the first time a female snowboarder accomplished that feat in competition.

"I knew if I went home with a gold medal knowing I could do better, I wouldn’t be very satisfied," Kim said to ESPN about her third run. "I wanted to do the back-to-back 10s. I wanted to go bigger. That third run was for me to prove to myself that I did it, so I could go home and be happy with myself."

The official medal tally on NBCOlympics.com notes that Kim won one of Team USA’s only three gold medals. The other two went to fellow snowboarders Red Gerard and Jamie Anderson, who competed in the men’s and women’s slopestyle groups, respectively.
