Chance the Rapper and Jamila Woods Want Chicago Students to Create Their Next Music Video

Two naive Chicago native artists are calling on the city’s predominantly Black and Brown public high school students to develop the music video for a song that champions the city.

Jamila Woods and Chance the Rapper tweeted yesterday (May 23) asking Chicago Public Schools (CPS) students to submit video treatments for "LSD." The song is from Woods’ 2016 record, "Heavn," and it takes its name from the Lake Shore Drive expressway that runs along Lake Michigan. It features Woods’ and Chance’s meditations on their hometown’s beauty and resilience in the face of outsiders’ judgment.

This "LSD" excerpt illustrates their love for the city:

To the coast, I prefer it to most
I like water that don’t burn my eyes when they open
I won’t let you criticize
my city like my skin, it’s so pretty
if you don’t like it, just leave it alone

Interested CPS high school students and graduating seniors must send their treatments by June 2. The winning student will shadow Vincent Martell and Sam Bailey, the directors behind Woods’ "Holy" video.

This isn’t the first time Woods and Chance have supported Chicago youth. Woods is the associate artistic director for arts literacy organization Young Chicago Authors, and Chance recently donated $1 million to the underfunded school district.
