In a time when the clamor for more diverse representation in front of and behind the camera grows louder by the day, Ava DuVernay is flexing her decision maker muscles to boost television’s melanin level.
During an interview at the Sundance Film Festival, the director told Reelblack.com that the 13-episode first season of her upcoming OWN show, “Queen Sugar,” will be helmed exclusively by women. And it appears that many of them will be Black, too. “We’re hiring an all-women directorial team, a lot of women that we know from the Black independent film space that I won’t announce yet,” she said. The move is in line with DuVernay’s mission to facilitate more projects lead by people of color. Watch the full interview above.
