The Artists of Color We’ll Be Pulling For At the Golden Globes

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association kicked off entertainment awards season with an announcement of the films, television shows and screen artists nominated for the 2019 Golden Globe Awards today (December 6).

rntThis year’s contenders include several movies and TV projects from artists of color. On the film side, three films by directors of color—“Black Panther," "BlacKkKlansman" and "If Beale Street Could Talk”—hold three of the five nominations for Best Motion Picture—Drama.

"BlackKkKlansman" star John David Washington competes against "Bohemian Rhapsody" star Rami Malek for the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture—Drama award. Washington’s director Spike Lee faces Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón ("Roma") in the Best Director—Motion Picture group. "Beale Street" director and writer Barry Jenkins, shares a nomination with Cuarón for Best Screenplay. "Beale Street" actress Regina King also earned a nod for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture.

Rapper Kendrick Lamar and singer SZA earned a Best Original Song—Motion Picture nomination for "All The Stars," their song from the "Black Panther" soundtrack.

"Crazy Rich Asians" earned a nomination for Best Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy, while lead actress Constance Wu contends for those genres’ Best Performance by an Actress statue. The international blockbuster competes against "Green Book," whose co-star Mahershala Ali earned a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture.

On the small screen side, lighting strikes twice for King, whose performance in "Seven Seconds" scored a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television. Darren Criss ("The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story") competes in the parallel lead male actor category. Criss’ co-star Edgar Ramírez and Thandie Newton ("Westworld") do the same in the limited series supporting actor and actress groups. 

Sandra Oh ("Killing Eve") earned a Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series—Drama nomination. "Beale Street" actor Stephan James ("Homecoming") and Billy Porter ("Pose") square off in the dramatic TV actor category. "Pose" also earned a nomination in the Best Television Series—Drama category, in which James and Oh’s two series also compete. Donald Glover was nominated for his performance in his series, "Atlanta."
