Once 7-year-old Natalie McGriff began having self-esteem issues around reading as well as the texture of her hair, her mother, Angie Nixon from Jacksonville, Fla, decided to do something about it.

The mother and daughter pair created “The Adventures of Moxie Girl,” a comic book about a little girl who becomes a superhero through powers acquired from a magical shampoo she used on her multicolored afro puffs. With her puffs, Moxie Girl is able to stop book-eating monsters from destroying the Jacksonville public library. 

McGriff presented her comic book at One Spark, a popular crowdfunding festival, and was awarded a check for $16,423.69 for its publication, beating out more than 530 other entries.

According to the Moxie Girl Instagram, the official comic is due out in June.
