There’s been an uproar recently over rapper 50 Cent’s alleged endorsement of gay teen suicide. On Friday, the rapper, who’s full name is Curtis Jackson, tweeted that, “If you a man and your over 25 and you don’t eat pu**y just kill yourself damn it. The world will be a better place Lol.” The missive quickly gained the attention of the LGBT community, which has been devastated recently over a sudden rash of high-profile gay teen suicides prompted by intense bullying. Was 50 viciously advocating gay suicide to his over 3 million followers?
Many people thought so, and the backlash forced the rapper to issue a series of clarifying follow-up tweets:
> The other night I made a joke about a blow job. My male followers enjoyed it. So I then went on to joke about women receiving the same. Some how they turned a simple joke about oral sex into a anti gay statement. I have nothing against people who choose an alternative lifestyle in fact I’ve publicly stated my mom loved women. Its funny how people think negative statements are news worthy but positive statements are not worthy of coverage.
To be sure, 50 Cent doesn’t exactly have a great track record with the gay community. Back in 2004, he told Playboy that he didn’t like having gay people around him because he’s “not comfortable with what their thoughts are.” But we’ll agree with him that last week’s controversy didn’t start with a dumb, homophobic tweet. It was just a dumb tweet, period. And with 50, there’s plenty more to choose from:
