The Critics’ Choice Awards, which aired Sunday (January 12), seemed to do what the Golden Globes could not this year when it awarded a (slightly more) diverse group of performers and creators with trophies.

Hosted by actor Taye Diggs, the ceremony recognized television shows and films, and people who created them. The night included a standing ovation for director Ava DuVernay when she accepted the award for Best Limited Series for the docuseries “When They See Us.” And newcomer Jharrel Jerome, who starred in the series about Black and Brown boys wrongfully convicted for the rape of a White woman in New York’s Central Park, took home the trophy for Best Actor In A Limited Series Or Movie Made For Television.

Other wins included a Best Director award for Bong Joon Ho and his Korean class-thriller “Parasite,” which also won for Best Foreign Language Film; Best Actress in a Drama Series to Regina King for her superhero turn on “Watchmen;” and “Us,” which received the Best Sci-fi Or Horror Movie award.

“Dolemite Is My Name” won for Best Comedy and for Ruth E. Carter’s costume design. The star of the Netflix film, comedian Eddie Murphy, received a Lifetime Achievement Award that was presented by Keegan-Michael Key “for his extraordinary career, including most recently his brilliant performance in ‘Dolemite,’” according to a statement  from the Critics Choice Association.
