On Thursday (December 12), Solange thrilled fans—and likely gained new ones—with the release of the director’s cut of the film component of her fourth studio album “When I Get Home” via Twitter. It is a moody kaleidoscope of Black bodies explored through high-art concepts that could easily live in a museum’s video exhibition or as an example of how Black bad-assness operates.

rnDirected by Knowles, with contributions from Alan Ferguson, Terence Nance, Jacolby Satterwhite and Ray Tintori, the project—described on YouTube as an “interdisciplinary performance art film”—was shot in Marfa, Texas. For 40 minutes, it offers countless homages to the performer’s home state and to Blackness as a whole, from Black women wearing various black-on-black outfits to Black cowboys riding through wide streets and around rodeo arenas.

This visual experience comes on the heels of the Grammy Award-winner being named the first recipient of the Lena Horne Prize for Artists Creating Social Impact, on December 6, for using “her platform to advocate for representation and justice while providing constructive and empowering messages.”
