The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences recognized actress Cicely Tyson and her 60+ years of crashing Hollywood boundaries with an honorary Oscar at the 10th annual Governors Awards in Los Angeles last night (November 18).

The "Sounder" and "The Autobiography of Jane Pittman" actress looked back on her career and the moment she learned the Academy recognized her with the special award, which is typically used to honor influential entertainment veterans who have yet to receive other Oscars. "Next month, on December 19th, I’m going to be 94 years old!" Tyson remarked, laughing, as the audience applauded. And I don’t know that I would cherish a better gift than this. This is the culmination of all those years of haves and have-nots."

Tyson delivered her remarks, which you can watch above, after "A Wrinkle in Time" director Ava DuVernay presented her with the award. "You are the seed for so many of us, and the rose that we adore," DuVernay said. "We blossom because of you, and for you."
