If she were still with us, unapologetically Black poet and activist Dr. Maya Angelou would be 89 years old today, April 4. Angelou died on May 28 (2014). In honor of her birthday, The Root drafted members of Brooklyn-based The Black Girl Project to perform her 1986 poem “The Black Family Pledge,” which you can read below.
