Actor Robert De Niro was honored at last night’s Golden Globe Awards with the Cecil B. DeMille Award–given to those who have made a large impact in the arts and entertainment industry–and managed to stir up controversy with a wise-cracking acceptance speech.

The prepared acceptance speech wasn’t the most articulate. In fact, it was awkward and, well, maybe just a little bit racist?

"I’m sorry more members of the foreign press aren’t with us tonight, but many of them were deported right before the show," De Niro said. "Along with most of the waiters. And Javier Bardem."

It’s not immediately clear whether he meant to dig at the Obama administration’s record-setting deportations, celebrate them or was just uninformed about the fact that 393,000 people were deported last year. De Niro went on to make a crack about Homeland Security’s controversial body scans at airports.
