On March 21, 1960, Sharpeville, South African police officers killed 69 people for peacefully protesting against the nation’s system of apartheid. Fifty-six years later, the date marks the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, a day which the United Nations hopes will force the world to tackle the issues surrounding racism and Afrophobia.

In commemoration, Gay McDougall—who joined the U.N.’s Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination last year—will take to Reddit for an Ask Me Anything on racism. McDougall famously integrated Agnes Scott College in 1965, and went on to dedicate her career to fighting for racial justice.

“I think that one of the most important thing [sic] is the message to policy makers and populations around the world right now is that societies as a whole pay for discrimination,” McDougall said in a U.N. announcement about the Reddit conversation. “They lose economically, politically, culturally when they exclude whole population groups. And I think we have enough evidence, hard evidence, to make the business case against discrimination.”
