Philly’s Got Love for Students, Too

The Campaign for Nonviolent Schools is resurrecting the past to build a stronger future.

By now, you’ve heard the media’s version of violent mobs of youth supposedly sweeping the streets of Philadelphia. Amidst the sometimes sensational media coverage, and substantial cuts to education, Philadelphia’s Campaign for Nonviolent Schools has been actively promoting nonviolent student leaders by using the traditions of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Gandhi as models.

The student-lead and driven campaign held a briefing about their platform March 22 and will hold a city-wide mobilization on March 30. The campaign is a reaction to the increase of youth violence in Philadelphia, from the 150 children school-aged and younger who were shot during the last school year to the popularity of "flash mobs", spontaneous gatherings of young folks that have caught the ire of local and national media. The mobs have also been shown to be kinda quirky.

If you’re in the Philadelphia area, be sure to attend the march, and if not, you can still help by filling out a simple form that supports endorses the Campaign for Nonviolent Schools.
