New ‘Stonewall’ Poster More Diverse Than Trailer

By Sameer Rao Aug 28, 2015

Is this the response that critics of "Stonewall," the upcoming Roland Emmerich-directed film that came under fire for whitewashing and removing trans people and women of color from the watershed riots’ tale, we were hoping for?

Just this week, a new promo poster for the film made waves. Based on a photo of the  Gay Liberation Front from that time period, the poster is prominently pink, includes a more racially-diverse cast of characters (including, notably, Puerto Rican American actor Jonny Beauchamp, whose character is described as a combination of Ray Castro and Sylvia Rivera; and Otoja Abit, who plays Marsha P. Johnson) than the trailer.

The poster is not stemming the tide of criticism, given that star billing is still going to white, cis men, but Emmerich and lead actor Jeremy Irvine both released statements defending the movie and assuring people that it is more diverse than it seems.
