Naomi Campbell Turns 40, Still Workin’ It In a White Industry

By Jorge Rivas May 21, 2010

Naomi Campbell is currently embroiled in a blood diamond scandal, and she’s notorious for throwing cell phones at peoples’ noggins, but you’ve gotta give it to her for continuing to thrive in an industry that just doesn’t employ people that look like her. Campbell is turning 40 tomorrow, and her career has been going strong for 25 of those years. Her modeling career is unprecedented. She was the first black woman to grace the cover of French Vogue, British Vogue and Time Magazine. In the early 1990s, she was part of the "Big Six" supermodels, alongside Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Christy Turlington, Linda Evangelista and Kate Moss — all of them white. And even most recently, when runways are dominated by white models, Naomi Cambell has managed to continue working. Happy Birthday, Naomi! Congratulations. We hope that you do the right thing and testify at the war crimes court case agaisnt Liberia’s ex-President Charles Taylor. And maybe stop wearing fur too.
