Michael Che to Crying Sanders Supporters: ‘You Still Get to Be White!’

By Sameer Rao Jul 28, 2016

Despite the presence of many Bernie Sanders supporters of color at various actions during the Democratic National Convention (DNC) this week, stereotypes of their Whiteness still persist. Michael Che, co-anchor of "Saturday Night Live‘s" "Weekend Update" news segment, played off that stereotype during a one-off report from Philadelphia.

"Look at all these White girls crying, it looks like Dave Matthews just played ‘Crash into Me,’" Che said, while showing clips of Sanders supporters and delegates crying during his DNC speech. "What do you think is going to happen if Bernie Sanders doesn’t get to be president? You still get to be White!"

Like they did for the Republican National Convention, Che and co-host Colin Jost visited the convention for a special "Weekend Update" segment that aired on MSNBC. As part of their report, they spoke to Sanders supporters and handed out Donald Trump-branded water to passersby.
