Meg Whitman wants you to know that she loves brown people. In her first spanish language ad set to run today during the World Cup match between Mexico and France, Whitman’s described as " the Republican who opposed the Arizona law and opposed Proposition 187." That, of course, may be more a matter of theory than practice. As La Opinion’s Pilar Marrero pointed out at New America Media, Whitman didn’t even vote in 1994, and hasn’t in many years. In another recent ad targeting Latinos, the former eBay executive enlists the help of Latino business leaders to act as talking heads and even herself admits that the task "won’t be easy." Certainly not with her the vitrol spewed by her campaign during the primary. In one ad aimed against primary opponent Steve Poizner, Whitman vowed to send the National Guard to patrol the U.S.-Mexico border. Ben Smith at Politico points out that Whitman’s campaign hopes to get the Latino Republican vote up to 35 percent, up from 17 percent back in 2007.
