The City of Angels made history last year when the city council voted 14-1 to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Los Angeles, the most populous United States city to make the switch, officially commemorates today’s (October 8) holiday and the region’s Native American population with the Inaugural Indigenous Peoples’ Day Celebration.

rntCity council representative Mitch O’Farrell, a member of the Wyandotte Nation who introduced the Indigenous Peoples Day resolution, presents the event in tandem with the Los Angeles City County Native American Indian Commission. An Eventbrite page for the celebration notes that Grand Park and City Hall grounds in the Downtown area will host a series of events, including a sunrise ceremony, parade of nations, pow wow, panel sessions on Indigenous identity and a fashion show. The festivities culminate in a concert featuring Redbone, the primarily Indigenous rock band best known for the 1974 hit single, "Come and Get Your Love."
