Despite letting Donald Trump host last fall and struggling with its own endemic diversity issues, “Saturday Night Live” consistently takes off its gloves to criticize the Republican presidential candidate. Saturday’s (March 5) “Voters for Trump Ad” sketch is no different.
The mock political advertisement featured several White cast members as seemingly stock “here’s why my candidate is great” characters. But they ultimately reveal racist paraphernalia and behavior, including a Nazi arm band, Ku Klux Klan hood (which cast member Vanessa Bayer irons as if it’s any other linen), “White Power” graffiti and wood stacked for a cross burning.
While the sketch does nothing to acknowledge the show’s own part in both tacitly promoting Trump and perpetuating its own biases, it is a reminder of what so many Trump supporters imply when they talk about his supposed values and refreshing perspectives.
Check out the sketch above, and let us know what you think about it in the comments.
