Harlem Has a Supernatural Savior in New ‘Luke Cage’ Trailer

The just-released trailer for Marvel‘s upcoming series "Luke Cage" shines a light on the show’s most understated supporting character—Harlem.

The Netflix series takes place entirely in Manhattan’s epicenter of Black culture and history, and a new trailer shrouds the neighborhood in mystery and dysfunction. The titular hero, played by Mike Colter ("The Good Wife"), sacrifices his autonomy and uses his impenetrable skin and tremendous strength (courtesy of an experiment gone wrong) to protect his fellow residents from exploitative criminals. Consequently, the trailer features clips of Cage deflecting bullets and punches with stone-faced determination and more than a few clutch blows.

Colter reprises his role from one of Marvel and Netflix’s previous collaborations, "Jessica Jones." The trailer also includes Oscar nominee Alfre Woodard ("12 Years a Slave") as local politician "Mariah Dillard," Mahershala Ali ("The Hunger Games") as criminal boss "Cornell ‘Cottonmouth’ Stokes" and Rosario Dawson (Marvel’s "Daredevil") as "Clarie Temple." We reported in April on the series’ soulful score from composer Adrian Younge ("Black Dynamite") and A Tribe Called Quest‘s Ali Shaheed Muhammad; elements of their aesthetic are also featured in the trailer, with clips of Run the Jewels‘ El-P rapping and Dionne Warwick’s "Walk on By."

"Luke Cage" premieres September 30 on Netflix.
