The country’s second-largest cable provider apologized to North Texas customers who received a racist message through the company’s set top boxes. 

"We are aware that an abhorrent message briefly appeared on some set top boxes," telecommunications company Charter Spectrum said in a statement to Dallas’ WFAA 8. "We apologize profusely to any of our customers who were subjected to it, and we are working to understand the cause."

Before the message was deleted on Tuesday (August 2), viewers saw: "Fuck Black Lives Matter! 1488 Brought to you by Phreak of Nature Baby J and King Benji! All Niggers Must Die!” The Anti-Defamation League’s website, cited by WFAA 8, explains that "1488" combines two popular White supremacist numerical codes: 

1488 is a combination of two popular White supremacist numeric symbols. The first symbol is 14, which is shorthand for the "14 Words" slogan: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for White children." The second is 88, which stands for "Heil Hitler" (H being the 8th letter of the alphabet). Together, the numbers form a general endorsement of White supremacy and its beliefs.

Charter customer April Taylor told WFAA 8 that she called the provider twice after receiving the message on her screen. A vice president called her back, saying that other customers received the same message. "Imagine if your kids were sitting in front of the TV and something racist about their race came across?" said Taylor.
